President’s Report

On behalf of the Executive Committee I’d like to welcome all new and returning families to St Mary’s Preschool.

I am thrilled to be involved at this level, and look forward to working with all members of the Committee, as well as staff and families to make a positive contribution to the St Mary’s community. With a full and enthusiastic team of Committee members on board, 2017 promises to be a productive, successful, and enjoyable year.

Working in the arts, education and creative learning is something I feel most passionate about. Since my daughter started in the 3 year old program at St Mary’s last year, I have been so impressed by the Preschool’s commitment to providing quality education and vision for a learning environment that encourages diversity, creativity and independence.

I believe the curriculum, staff, and community spirit at St Mary’s Preschool is truly something special and I hope that each and every child and family has the same rewarding experience this year.

There are a few events coming up in the next month, including a cake sale Saturday 25th February and a working bee scheduled for Sunday 26th February, your support and assistance would be most appreciated.

Possum Report

Welcome to St Mary’ and 3yo kinder 2017

It has been great to meet with the children and we have had a good start to the year& already the children are settling into their new kinder routine. The children are interacting & playing well together & many conversations are taking place between the children & we anticipate a fun year together. Being part of a smaller group is not quite so overwhelming—it is easier to learn a few new names rather than a lot of new names.

The children will be able to experience a wide range of activities throughout the year and we look forward to developing an enriching rapport with both you and your child. Already most children are ready to hold a conversation with both their peers and adults in the kinder and these conversations will become more frequent as your child develops their own independence and confidence.

Activities have been kept simple at the start of the year as the children become familiar with their new surroundings and new friends at kinder.

Kinder routines are established at the start of term and we remind the children about walking indoors, wearing hats outdoors during the summer months, toileting, asking for help when needed, health & hygiene at the bathroom & caring & sharing with others. We are enjoying story & songs together at group time & we eat fruit together at morning & afternoon tea time. Please send fruit only & a named drink water bottle & ensure that your child can manage their container.

Also remember to sign your child “IN” & “OUT” of the attendance book every day and instruct other people dropping off or picking up your child to do so.  The children are “instructed” to remain on the carpet area until an adult comes to the carpet to pick them up. Please be mindful of the front gate & only take your child through the gate at departure time.

Our Possum group class representative is Bethany {Hope’s mum] & she will send you a weekly email about what we are doing at kinder & any reminders about events or happenings throughout the term

If you have any concerns, suggestions  or queries please do not hesitate to speak with me or phone me at the kinder.

Penguin Report

Welcome to Penguin group for 2017.  We have had a wonderful start, and the children have all settled well.   The first few weeks at kinder is all about settling in, making new friends, becoming familiar with the kinder routines, and most importantly having lots of FUN!

It is also a time for us to get to know your child, their interests and capabilities.  From our observations, and the information you have provided for us in your questionnaires we are able to plan our program, and make goals as to how we can further extend your child.

We work in partnership with you, and always welcome ideas, suggestions and feedback.

At the end of the first week we asked the children what their favourite activities had been;

  • ‘Playing with the dress Ups’
  • ‘Playing Pirates and looking for treasure’
  • ‘Drawing and paintings’
  • ‘Playing on the swings’
  • ‘Building with the magnetic tiles’
  • ‘Dressing the babies’
  • ‘Meeting Nosey’

Our first week was busy and very productive, the children really enjoyed exploring their new kinder learning environment, and making the most of all the activities on offer.

Over the next few weeks we will be exploring the topic of ‘ME’, exploring how unique and individual we all are.  We have already starting talking about ‘sustainability, discussing how we can recycle at kinder, and also grow our own food.  Hopefully our seeds will start to grow really soon.  Howie our kinder bear has started visiting families, and we are looking forward to hearing of his adventures.   Shortly we will begin our lending library, to further inspire a love of reading in all children.

The weekly program is displayed on our Penguin board in the foyer, and outlines the interest of the children and weekly activities.  All learning goals are linked to the Victorian Early Years Learning Framework (VEYLF).   Shortly you will notice pages being added to your child’s portfolios.  These are located about your child’s lockers, and are there for you to enjoy, and keep track of your child’s progress throughout the year.

  • As the weather is still warm, remember to apply sunscreen before attending kinder
  • Remember to name your child’s belongings
  • Add your name to our Parents Roster

We are looking forward to a wonderful year in Penguin Group.   Any queries please let us know.

Emma & Cath.

Koala Report

Welcome to all the families and children to the 2017 Koala Kinder year!

There has been lots of excitement meeting one another and exploring our new kinder environment.

Group chat time together we are talking about taking care of each other and our belongings, making new friends and having healthy food lunch boxes. For our afternoon tea we prepare a sharing fruit platter. Please ensure that you bring an extra piece of fruit to share with the Koala group for afternoon snack.

Term one is all about getting to know our new kinder friends, learning spaces, Koala kinder routine and teachers Leah, Heather. A and Heather.F.

This term we will be a part of a Music Hey Dee Ho program called “Funky Dance” every fortnight. This program incorporates music, dance and drama. Props such as dress ups, instruments, felt story boards and puppets are used as a means to create a fun and confident building learning experiences.

We will be making the most of the last warm summer days with lots of water play and exploring other outdoor experiences e.g. climbing/obstacle equipment, sandpit, soccer and group sports games.

In the weeks to come will be exploring “Out and About” outings to Dendy Oval, Dendy bush fossicking and other local places that extend the children’s interests.

We will be exploring the interest area “all about me and my family” through discussions, books, poster, photos and the sharing of news. Please bring in a family photo to share. We would love you to come along and join in with one of our kinder sessions during parent help on either a Tuesday or Thursday morning or afternoon.

We have a special friend in the Koala group called “Henry the Hippo”. He will be excited to spend time with the Koala children and families outside of Kinder. Henry has diary where shared time is written, drawn about or even photographed.

Please come and see me any time after the kinder session’s or on a Wednesday for any questions you may have.

Koala reminders

Spare clothes are always great to have in your kinder bags.

Please make sure your child’s water bottle are clearly named.

Please apply sunscreen before kinder in the mornings. Sunscreen is next to the sign in book.

We ask that supportive shoes are to be worn allowing for your child to climb, jump, run and participate in outdoor activities safely. It is a good idea that toes are also covered.

Working with Children Checks

We would like to take a moment of your time to inform you about a State-wide policy that all adults volunteering with children have a current Working With Children Check (WWCC). We were lenient on this policy last year but will have to enforce it more thoroughly this year.

If you intend on coming in for parent assistance we urge you to complete your WWCC.

For volunteers this is a free and super simple check, all you have to do is the following;

  1. follow the link below and fill out the questionarre

  1. A barcobe will be sent to your smartphone to show at a participating Aus Post location where you will get your photo taken
  2. Wait for you card to be posted to you

If you already have a WWCC, you will simply need to add St Mary’s Pre-school as a listed organisation.

Thanks to all and we appreciate your co-operation.

Thank You
